This illustrated step by step tutorials shows you how to create a linear pattern on a solid part using an existing feature. 
 
1) Create a cube as shown in Figure 1. {Follow the steps shown in Extrude - Tutorial for beginners to create a cube}

2) Now create a hole as shown in Figure 2. {Follow the steps shown in Simple Hole - Tutorial for beginners to create a simple hole}

3) Now select "Linear Pattern" tool from tool bar or from insert menu as shown in figure 3 and 4 respectively.
